Safety and trust

How we choose every nanny

You’re trusting someone with your kids in a new country. Here’s exactly what we check before anyone is listed, and what happens after.

Our vetting process

Every nanny goes through each of these steps before they’re listed.

  1. Detailed application

Nannies tell us about their childcare experience, languages, the ages they’re comfortable with and why they want to do this work.

  2. Document check

We check a government photo ID and, for non-Japanese nationals, the residence card and status of residence to confirm they can legally work in Japan.

  3. Two reference calls

We speak with at least two people who have seen them care for children, such as past families, schools or childcare employers.

  4. In-person interview

Our team meets every nanny face to face. We talk through real scenarios, check their English and get a feel for how they are with kids.

  5. First aid and CPR

We strongly recommend pediatric first aid or CPR training and point every nanny to free online courses. It isn't required, but when a nanny has a certificate we check it.

  6. Trial and ongoing reviews

New nannies are marked as new. We read every review, check in after early bookings and pause anyone whose care falls short.

Payments that protect families

You pay through TabiCare with Stripe, never in cash. We hold the payment and only release it to your nanny after the booking is done. If your nanny cancels, you get a full refund.

Messaging stays in the app

Chat with nannies before you book. Phone numbers, emails and social handles are hidden until a booking is confirmed, so everything stays on the record.

What we can and can’t promise

No checks can remove every risk, and we won't pretend otherwise. What we can do is check carefully, encourage first aid training, listen to families and act quickly when something doesn't feel right. Always share allergies and medical notes, and trust your instincts.

Safety tips for every booking

A few simple habits that keep the first meeting relaxed and safe for everyone.

For families

  • Meet in the lobby first

Say hello in your hotel lobby or another public spot, then head up together. It's a relaxed way to meet and hand over the details.

  • Check it's your nanny

Make sure your nanny matches her TabiCare profile photo and name. If something doesn't add up, don't hand over, and message us.

  • Do a quick handover

Allergies, medicines, bedtime, what's OK to eat, emergency numbers and when you'll be back. Two minutes saves a lot of guessing.

  • Keep your phone on

Your nanny may need to reach you. In an emergency in Japan, call 119 for an ambulance or 110 for the police, then tell us.

  • Keep it in TabiCare

Book, pay and message through TabiCare. Everything stays on the record, and your payment is protected.

For nannies

  • Meet in the lobby first

Meet the family in the hotel lobby or another public place before going to a room.

  • Check the booking matches

The parent's name should match the booking, and the children should be there. If they don't, you don't have to stay.

  • Tell someone where you are

Share the address and times with a friend or family member before each booking.

  • You can always leave

If anything feels wrong, leave and tap "I left for my safety" on the booking. You'll still be paid in full, and it never counts against you.

  • No cash, no side deals

Only accept bookings and payments through TabiCare. It protects you, and it means we can step in if something goes wrong.
